Why Is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit Important?

It's easy to think:

"I feel fine. Why do I need to see my doctor"

Feeling well is exactly when preventive healthcare can be valuable.

The goal is not only to treat health problems after they appear. Preventive care helps you and your healthcare provider recognize potential concerns, monitor changes and make informed decisions about your health before problems become more complicated.

Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit provides an opportunity to ask:

● Has anything changed with my health during the past year?
● Am I due for preventive screenings?
● Are my medications and supplements still up to date?
● Are there health risks we should be monitoring?
● Have there been changes in my blood pressure, weight or overall wellness?
● Are there steps I can take to help maintain my health and independence?

Think of your Annual Wellness Visit as an opportunity to check in, look ahead and create a plan for the coming year.

What's Included in a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

Your visit is personalized based on your health history, current needs and whether this is your first or a subsequent Annual Wellness Visit.

Your healthcare provider may review or update:

Your Medical and Family History

Changes in your medical history, previous illnesses, surgeries, hospitalizations, allergies and family health history can provide important information about your current and future health
risks.

Your Medications and Supplements

Your provider will review the medications and supplements you're currently taking.

Keeping an accurate medication list is particularly important if you see multiple healthcare providers.

Your Healthcare Providers

Your care team may include specialists and other healthcare professionals.

Maintaining an updated list helps your primary care provider understand who is involved in your care.

Basic Health Measurements

Your visit may include measurements such as your weight and blood pressure. Other routine measurements may be taken when appropriate based on your health and medical history.

Your Health Risk Assessment

Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit includes a Health Risk Assessment.

This can help your provider better understand factors that may affect your health, including physical activity, nutrition, daily activities, emotional well-being and other health or lifestyle risks.

Fall Risk and Everyday Safety

Your provider may discuss your mobility, balance, fall risk and ability to safely complete everyday activities.

Cognitive Health

Your provider will look for potential signs of cognitive impairment and may discuss concerns reported by you, your family or caregivers.

Preventive Screenings

Your healthcare provider can review which preventive screenings may be appropriate based on factors such as your age, health history, previous screenings and individual risk factors.

Your Personalized Prevention Plan

One of the most valuable parts of the Annual Wellness Visit is looking ahead.

Your provider can create or update a personalized prevention plan and screening schedule abased on your individual healthcare needs.

What Should I Bring to My Medicare Annual Wellness Visit?

A little preparation can help you get more from your appointment.

Consider bringing:

● A complete list of your current prescription medications
● Over-the-counter medications
● Vitamins and supplements
● Relevant medical and immunization records
● An updated family health history
● A list of specialists and other healthcare providers involved in your care
● Questions or health concerns you want to remember to discuss

If you're a new patient, providing accurate information about your health history helps your new healthcare team develop a more complete understanding of your needs.

Is a Medicare Annual Wellness Visit the Same as an Annual Physical?

No. This is one of the most important things for Medicare patients to understand.

A Medicare Annual Wellness Visit and a traditional routine physical are different services.

Medicare Annual Wellness Visit

The Annual Wellness Visit focuses on preventive planning and health risk assessment.

Its purpose is to identify health risks, review preventive needs and develop or update your personalized prevention plan.

Routine Physical

A traditional physical generally involves a more comprehensive physical examination.

Original Medicare does not cover a routine physical examination as part of the Annual Wellness Visit benefit.

There is also a separate "Welcome to Medicare" preventive visit available during the first 12 months after enrolling in Medicare Part B.

Preventive Care Is About More Than One Appointment

Your Medicare Annual Wellness Visit shouldn't exist in isolation.

One of the advantages of receiving preventive care through an established internal medicine and primary care practice is continuity of care.

Your healthcare provider gets to know your history.

They can see how your health changes over time.

They can monitor chronic conditions.

They can review medications and previous test results.

And when a new health concern develops, they have valuable context about your overall health.

At Suntree Internal Medicine, our physicians focus on preventive care, chronic disease management and personalized wellness for adults.

Our practice also offers same-day appointments, on-site diagnostic testing and extended office hours, helping make ongoing primary care more convenient.
