Nuclear Stress Test
At Suntree Internal Medicine, we offer nuclear stress testing to accurately evaluate your heart’s blood flow and overall cardiac function.

What is a Nuclear Stress Test?

A nuclear stress test (also known as myocardial perfusion imaging) is a specialized, non-invasive heart test that combines a stress test with nuclear imaging.

  • You will receive a small amount of radioactive tracer through an IV.

  • Images of your heart are taken while you are at rest and again during stress (either through exercise on a treadmill or with medication that simulates exercise).

  • A special camera detects the tracer to show how well blood is flowing to different parts of your heart muscle.

  • The entire test usually takes 3 to 4 hours.

This advanced diagnostic tool provides detailed images that a standard stress test cannot.

Why Nuclear Stress Testing is Important

Nuclear stress testing is one of the most accurate ways to detect:

  • Coronary artery disease and blockages

  • Areas of the heart with reduced blood flow

  • Risk of heart attack

  • Effectiveness of current heart medications or treatments

  • Causes of chest pain, shortness of breath, or irregular heartbeats

It helps your doctor determine whether you need further treatment, such as medication changes, cardiac procedures, or lifestyle modifications.

Importance of Follow-Up with Your Physician

The detailed images and results from a nuclear stress test are most valuable when carefully reviewed with your doctor. At Suntree Internal Medicine, we recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment soon after your test.

During this visit, your physician will:

  • Explain your test results in clear, easy-to-understand terms

  • Discuss any areas of concern regarding heart blood flow

  • Create or adjust your personalized treatment plan

  • Answer all your questions and provide next steps

This follow-up ensures you fully understand your heart health and receive the most appropriate care moving forward.
