What is a Holter Monitor?

A Holter monitor is a small, portable electrocardiogram (ECG) device that continuously records your heart’s electrical activity for 24 to 48 hours while you go about your normal daily activities.

  • Small electrodes are placed on your chest and connected to a lightweight recorder worn on your belt or carried in a pouch.

  • The device records every heartbeat during your regular routine — including work, exercise, rest, and sleep.

  • You will be asked to keep a simple diary of your activities and any symptoms (such as palpitations, dizziness, or chest discomfort).

  • After the monitoring period, you return the device to our office, and the data is analyzed for any abnormal heart rhythms.

The test is painless, non-invasive, and does not interfere with most daily activities.

Why Holter Monitoring is Important

A standard EKG only captures your heart rhythm for a few seconds. A Holter monitor gives a much more complete picture because it records your heart over an entire day or two. It is especially useful for detecting:

  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

  • Atrial fibrillation or other intermittent issues

  • Causes of palpitations, fainting, or unexplained dizziness

  • How well heart medications are working

  • Silent ischemia or other heart conditions that occur during normal activity

Early detection through Holter monitoring can help prevent serious complications such as stroke or heart failure.

Importance of Follow-Up with Your Physician

The data from the Holter monitor is most valuable when reviewed by your doctor. At Suntree Internal Medicine, we strongly recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment after completing the test.

During this visit, your physician will:

  • Thoroughly analyze your Holter monitor results

  • Correlate any recorded abnormalities with your symptoms and activity diary

  • Discuss findings and answer your questions

  • Recommend treatment, medication adjustments, or further testing if needed

This personalized follow-up ensures you receive the right care and peace of mind regarding your heart health.
