What is Spirometry?
Spirometry is a simple, non-invasive breathing test that measures how much air you can inhale and exhale, and how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs.
You will be asked to take a deep breath and blow forcefully into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer.
The test is usually repeated several times for accuracy.
It takes only 10 to 15 minutes and requires minimal preparation.
Our trained staff will coach you through the test in a comfortable setting.
Spirometry provides important measurements such as Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) and Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV1), which help evaluate your lung capacity and airflow.
Why Spirometry Testing is Important
Spirometry is one of the most common and useful tests for evaluating respiratory health. It helps our physicians:
Diagnose asthma, COPD, chronic bronchitis, and other lung diseases
Assess the severity of breathing problems
Monitor how well current medications (like inhalers) are working
Evaluate shortness of breath, chronic cough, or wheezing
Screen individuals at risk due to smoking, occupational exposure, or family history
Early detection through spirometry can significantly improve treatment outcomes and quality of life.
Importance of Follow-Up with Your Physician
The results of your spirometry test are most valuable when reviewed and interpreted by your doctor. At Suntree Internal Medicine, we recommend a follow-up appointment after your test.
During this visit, your physician will:
Explain your spirometry results in clear, easy-to-understand terms
Discuss any abnormalities or concerns
Adjust medications or prescribe new treatments if needed
Create or update your personalized asthma or COPD action plan
Recommend lifestyle changes or further testing
This follow-up ensures you receive the right care and the best possible control over your breathing.
