What Are Ultrasounds?
Ultrasound (also called sonography) is a safe, painless, and radiation-free imaging test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of organs and tissues inside your body.
We perform several types of ultrasounds in our office, including:
Abdominal ultrasound (liver, gallbladder, kidneys, spleen)
Carotid ultrasound (neck arteries for stroke risk)
Thyroid ultrasound (thyroid gland evaluation)
Renal / Kidney ultrasound
Bladder ultrasound
Aortic aneurysm screening
Soft tissue and limited pelvic ultrasounds
The procedure is typically quick (15–45 minutes), non-invasive, and performed by our trained staff while you lie comfortably on an exam table.
Why Ultrasound Imaging is Important
Ultrasounds are a valuable diagnostic tool that help our physicians:
Detect gallstones, kidney stones, liver problems, and other abdominal conditions
Evaluate thyroid nodules and abnormalities
Assess blood flow in the carotid arteries to prevent strokes
Screen for abdominal aortic aneurysms
Monitor chronic conditions and guide further treatment
Provide quick answers during your visit
Because ultrasounds are radiation-free, they are safe for repeated use and suitable for most patients.
Importance of Follow-Up with Your Physician
While the ultrasound provides detailed images, the most important part is expert interpretation. At Suntree Internal Medicine, we recommend scheduling a follow-up appointment with your physician after your ultrasound.
During this visit, your doctor will:
Review and explain the ultrasound findings in detail
Discuss any abnormalities or normal results
Recommend treatment, lifestyle changes, or additional testing if needed
Create or adjust your personalized care plan
This follow-up ensures you fully understand your results and receive timely, appropriate care.
